Daily Hearing Aid Care

In the morning:

  1. Check the hearing aid for ear wax, dirt, and debris. Clean with a hearing aid brush. For behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, check the earmold for ear wax and the tubing for hardening.
  2. Check the battery strength with a battery tester. If weak, then replace the battery.
  3. Turn the hearing aid ON. For BTEs, set it to the “M” position.
  4. Put the hearing aid in your ear and listen. For parents, use the listening device and listen.
    1. Does the sound get louder as you turn up the volume?
    2. Is the six-letter (“aaa, ooo, eee, shh, sss, mmm”) sound check clear?

If no, then proceed to the hearing aid troubleshooting section.

If yes, then the hearing aid is functioning properly.

In the evening:

  1. When the hearing aid is not in use, turn it OFF and remove the battery.
  2. For parents, check your child’s ears for redness or irritations from the earmold and hearing aid.
  3. Check for dirt on the hearing aid, switches, receiver, and microphone. Clean with a hearing aid brush.
  4. At least once a week, place the entire hearing aid in a dry aid kit. If moisture and perspiration occurs daily, then use the dry aid kit every night.
  5. Put the hearing aid and batteries in a safe place, away from children and pets. Children and pets are curious about hearing aids and will hide, eat, or play with them until destroyed.

DO NOT put hearing aid batteries in your mouth. In case of battery ingestion, contact your family physician and the National Button Battery Ingestion Hot Line: (202) 625-3333.

DO NOT expose the hearing aid to extreme cold or hot temperatures, such as a very hot car dashboard or heat from a hairdryer.

DO NOT get the hearing aid wet. Remove the hearing aid before showering or if caught in a rainstorm without protection. If the hearing aid does get wet, then: 1) throw away the battery, 2) wipe off the excess water, and 3) let it air dry overnight with the battery door open. Do not put the hearing aid in the oven or microwave, it will melt within seconds.

DO NOT clean the hearing aid with alcohol or cleaning fluids, these will cause the case to crack over time. Clean the hearing aid with a cloth or soft brush.

DO NOT apply hairspray, spray perfume or cologne while wearing a hearing aid. These products will build up and damage the hearing aid over time. Put on your hearing aid after these products have been applied.
