What to Expect from Hearing Aids

  • Hearing aids will not restore your hearing back to normal.
  • Hearing in quiet should be improved.
  • Hearing in moderate noise background should be improved.
  • Hearing in noise will not be as good as hearing in quiet.
  • Hearing in loud noise should be no worse then without hearing aids.
  • Soft speech should be audible.
  • Conversational speech should be comfortable.
  • Loud speech should not be uncomfortable.
  • No whistling should occur if the hearing aids are seated properly.
  • Fit should be comfortable.
  • Own voice should be “acceptable”.
  • It takes time to fully achieve the benefits of hearing aids. In the beginning you will hear all kinds of distracting sounds. Once your brain has been “rewired” to accept the new sounds, then it will not be as distracting.
  • The above information was found in a handout “What I Can Expect from Hearing Aids” printed by Widex.
