Becoming a Hearing Aid User
1. Schedule an appointment with our office for an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician visit, along with an audiologist for a hearing evaluation. This appointment will take approximately 45 minutes. If you are a hearing aid candidate, we would recommend a follow-up appointment for a hearing aid evaluation. Typically, this is scheduled for a later date, due to time constraints during clinic hours. 2. Schedule a hearing aid evaluationappointment. This appointment will take approximately 1 hour. At this time, we will discuss your various options regarding amplification. If any additional testing is needed to help with the selection of hearing aids, it is done at this time. Your audiologist will make a professional recommendation based on the amount and type of loss, as well as features that would be specifically helpful to you, as a unique individual. Usually, if you have a hearing loss in both ears, then using two hearing aids is best. Listening is difficult with only one hearing aid, and it is more difficult to distinguish where sounds are coming from. It is always important to express your needs and preferences regarding hearing aids, so that with your audiologist, you can achieve the best possible results. To order hearing aids, impressions will be taken of your ears. These are sent to the hearing aid manufacturer to develop hearing aids that are specifically made to fit your ears. Typically, we receive your hearing aids within 2 weeks from the time they are ordered. The hearing aid order agreement form will be carefully and thoroughly discussed with you before you sign the agreement and pay a deposit. This form includes an explanation of hearing aid services, medical clearance, deposit, payment, trial period, return, warranty coverage, extension of warranty, and loss policies. A copy of this form will be provided for your personal records. 3. Schedule a hearing aid fitting appointment. When we receive your hearing aids, your audiologist will call you to schedule this appointment. This appointment will take approximately 1 ½ hours. We would love for you to bring a family member or close friend with you to this appointment. They will provide you with a familiar voice to hear with your new hearing aids, and added support as you take this exciting step towards improving your life. At this time, our goals are to:
The hearing aid purchase agreement form will be carefully and thoroughly discussed with you before you sign the agreement and pay the remaining balance due on the hearing aids. This form is a review of the policies explained in the previously signed hearing aid order agreement and includes your hearing aid’s make, model, serial number, payment and fitting date. A copy of this agreement will be provided for your personal records. 4. Schedule a hearing aid follow-up appointment. This appointment will take approximately 15 – 30 minutes. Typically, enrollment in the battery club begins during this visit. Also, it is common to make adjustments to the hearing aid settings. With digital hearing aid technology, we are able to make even a small adjustment to the sound quality, which could result in a huge improvement to the patient. 5. Schedule a six-month hearing aid maintenance appointment. This appointment will take approximately 15 – 30 minutes. This visit may need to be scheduled sooner than six-months depending upon your hearing aid’s exposure to the elements, such as moisture, dirt, earwax, etc. We thoroughly clean and check your hearing aids using special equipment designed for hearing aids. This visit is to ensure that your hearing aids are in good working condition and functioning properly. 6. Schedule an annual hearing healthcare appointment. This appointment will take approximately 1 hour. This visit is to clean and check your hearing aids, confirm your hearing aid warranty coverage, continue battery club membership, re-evaluate your hearing with and without hearing aids, and receive a hearing healthcare visit with an ENT physician.
